Diwali (or Divali, Deepavali, the “festival of lights”) is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated in autumn every year. Diwali is the biggest and the brightest festival in India. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness.The festival preparations and rituals typically extend over a five-day period.

What you need to know is, there are 11 public holidays in Singapore. They includes Chinese New Year (2-days), the Buddhist holiday of Vesak Day (1-day), the 2 Islamic holidays of Hari Raya Aidil Fitri (1 Syawal) and Hari Raya Aidil Adha (10 Zulhijah), the Hindu holiday of Deepavali (1-day) and the 2 Christian holidays of Good Friday and Christmas Day (25 December). The secular holidays are New Year’s Day, Labour Day and National Day.

We celebrated Deepavali with an Idian family. It was very interesting and we learnt a lot about this new culture. During this event, they put candle everywhere and the women dress the famous sari.
