Condominiums

04th October 2014,

Singapore is a very expensive city to rent an appartment or just a room. There are 2 types of appartment, condo and HDB. HDB is the local renting. For foreign people there is almost one possibility which is to rent a room in a condo (this include swimming pool, tennis court, gym center…). Apparently, you can also rent a room in an HDB, but not all of them. HDB are cheapert than condo and more local.

The rent for a room (master bedroom or single room) is almost the same as Paris prices. Depending on the district you choose you the gap can be very important.

Firstly, we rented a master bedroom near to bukit timah (~1300 SGD), but if you look near to Newton, Orchard and Doby Ghaut it’s much higher.

The best website to find a room is easyroomate.

Direction Shanghai

Departure: 17th May , 2013 10:00 am

Arrival: 18th May , 2013 9:00 am

Travel time: 12 hours of travel.

The journey began earlier, starting at 10:00 am from Villejuif, I took the taxi towards Charles de Gaulle airport. Boarding with China Eastern Airlines, luggage allowed: 1 baggage carry-on and 23kg baggage for the check-in.

I was not lucky, I had the place next to the toilet (suggestion: ask before a place far away from the toilet, especially if you are a light sleeper …). After 12h of an endless parade to the toilets (it does not stop more than 2 minutes).

I arrived in Shanghai. Stifling heat very wet and gray (tropical climate). I found my driver (Laurence kindly booked a private driver for me) towards Suzhou. I could already feel the language barrier, no dialogue possible between the driver and me, a simple indication with hand where I want to go written in Chinese.

Chinese visa

To enter China you must apply for a visa and it’s a long story … There are no less than 4 different visas for China. Touristic, business, student, permanent visa, etc, etc.

You must provide full administrative paper such as letter of invitation from the company or family, passport, visa application form (5-9 pages is requested for the visa).

Read carefully all the documents required. At the Chinese embassy they don’t help at all so, the best is to choose a private association they will help you (I did it at visa Lyon). I did it first at the Embassy. They asked me unnecessary paper to create my visa, I did not need those papers with the association…

Linköping Corridor Room

What is a Corridor Room ? A corridor room it’s an apartment with 8 rooms, a living room and a kitchen; each room has one bathroom with toilet, a desk, wardrobe and a bed (one person). In Linköping there is a neighbor with around 30 buildings of 6/7 corridors. It’s located in Ryds.

How can I get a corridor ? Well two/three options.

  1. You send all the application very early (February for the autumn semester), you can get a corridor through the university. First come first served !
  2. You can create an account on Studentbostäder i Linköping. You earn one point per day from the day you registered. Same, the earlier is the best. You will need around 200 points to be able to get a corridor…
  3. You can take the lease of someone leaving but this is not legal but very usual !
